Our Curriculum

    Art & Design

    Subject Lead: Mrs Skyrme

Art and Design at Fairfield is encapsulated by focusing on colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space and the opportunity to learn about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines. As well as providing children the important opportunity to make links to their own work with others.

Art and Design is a foundation subject in the National Curriculum. Through the delivery of the creative curriculum, at Fairfield we aim to develop meaningful learning opportunities linking in with an in-depth project, for children to take ownership and see a project from design to production. This is in line with the National Curriculum objectives and the key skills reflect the varying processes children will experience in order to achieve chosen objectives.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, Art skills are developed as part of a wider topic based approach. We provide a range of experiences that encourage exploration, observation, problem-solving, critical thinking and discussion. These activities, indoors and outdoors, attract the children’s interest and ignite curiosity.

At Fairfield First School we are taking the necessary steps to ensure a creative curriculum across the spectrum of our key stages. Within Art, we are following the children’s curiosity and taking account of pupil innovation. Teachers are continuing to deliver the subject through a topic led approach in order to ensure that child-centred learning is achieved. This means at times, taking a step back and letting children lead their own way into experimentation and discoveries in this subject. Consistent communication, reviewing and gathering of evidence is imperative in order to ensure that the creative curriculum is well managed. Teachers are using the Progression of Skills list to ensure full coverage of skills in this subject.

When selecting and choosing projects and artists within Art, we strive for vibrancy and our mission is for children to become immersed with art and culture from British society, therefore, under pinning British values, as well as learning deeply and open-heartedly from other countries and cultures too. This ensures we promote diversity, tolerance and develop a deep appreciation for other cultures and beliefs. Art affords a wealth of multicultural opportunities and a “window” for children into life beyond their own experiences.

Every year we dedicate a whole week to the Arts for our annual Fairfield Arts Week!
