Autumn term
English in Chestnut
The children will be focusing on the following texts and purposes of writing this term.
Autumn 1
The Detective Dog: A narrative based on another adventure for Detective Dog.
Cave Baby: A fact file inspired by an animal seen in Cave Baby.
Nell and the Circus of Dreams: Descriptive writing about the circus.
Autumn 2
How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth: Instructions on washing a woolly mammoth.
Stone Age Boy: Using speech to show action in a story.
Excitable Edgar: Letter of apology from Edgar to the villagers.
Reading in Chestnut
We will continue to use VIPERS as our whole class reading approach. This term we will be using the book The Hodgeheg by Dick King-Smith and A Bear Called Paddington by Michael Bond.
Accelerated Reader
The children should continue to read daily and log this in their reading record books. The children should take an Accelerated Reader quiz on their AR book, which has been matched to their reading level when they feel confident about the content of the book.
Maths in Chestnut
This term we will be covering Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, and Multiplication and Division.
Science in Chestnut
This term we will be focusing on the big questions of 'What are the properties of flowers and what are their roles?' and 'What is the purpose of a skeleton?'.
Foundation subjects in Chestnut
Music will be taught through Ukulele throughout the year, amongst many opportunities to sing and rehearse different pieces of music, and explore other instruments.

Homework
Weekly spellings from SpellingShed will be sent home on Mondays ready for a test on the following Monday.
Times Tables Rock Stars should be used as much as possible to improve rapid recall of times tables, ready for the statutory assessment in year 4.
Optional homework is provided every half term to earn some extra house points! Work can be brought into school or submitted on Google Classroom. More information will be shared about this on Google Classroom.
Enrichment and Forest School
Chestnut have their Forest School sessions every week on Fridays. Kits should be brought into school and stored in the forest school pigeonholes, ready for the session that day. The children should be prepared for the weather, and have long-sleeved tops and trousers at all times.
